Leopold® Type S® and Type SL® Underdrain

The underdrain collects filtered water from the filter during the filter run and introduces water and air during back-
washing and air scour. Leopold employs an underdrain system featuring advanced Leopold® Type S® technology. Leopold® Type S® technology underdrain is designed to provide uniform distri-
bution of wash water and air to clean every corner of the filter without media upset.

Leopold® Universal® Type S® and Type SL® underdrain deliver a broader airflow range?from 1 to 5 scfm/ft. Air stability is improved with all orifices providing uniform and continuous airflow. Water maldistribution is lower?less than +/-5 percent.

Type S® underdrain is ideal for designs requiring longer laterals. Type SL® underdrain features a lower profile, making it ideal for smaller shallow filters where greater filter media depth is desired. Both feature the dual parallel lateral design pioneered by Leopold, ensuring uniform distribution of water and air at each dispersion orifice opening even in extra long lengths. Both feature a unique water recovery channel for superior air scouring and water backwash performance. Both are constructed of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) construction for strength and corrosion resistance.

I.M.SŪ 200 and I.M.SŪ 1000 Media Retainers

Engineered to eliminate everything you worry about

Providing a more effective option than using gravel in most applications, these next generation media retainers from the industry leader in water and wastewater filtration systems have been carefully engineered to do their job and help you do yours. As part of the complete Leopold underdrain system, the new I.M.S 200 and I.M.S 1000 media retainers increase flexibility in media design by eliminating up to 14" (35 cm) of support gravel. And their physically rigid construction reduces flexing of the slots and the chance of clogging or biofouling. Leopold® Engineered Filter Media® Anthracite

The filter media in a Leopold filter?media quality, bed composition, bed depth, and grain size distribution?is designed according to filter configuration, raw water quality, pretreatment, and desired filtrate quality. Leopold filters employ Engineered Filter Media® anthracite, the lowest uniformity coefficient (UC) anthracite filter media available. Leopold® Engineered Filter Media® anthracite typically produces consistent improvements in turbidity removal due, in part, to more efficient solids loading. Plus, low-UC media produces smaller changes in effluent turbidity during periods of peak influent turbidity.

ITT readily supplies a full scope of media for filter designs. In addition to filter anthracite in all sizes and UCs, ITT can provide:

  • Silica support gravel
  • Silica filtration sand
  • High-density support gravel
  • High-density filtration sand
  • Manganese greensand
  • Granular activated carbon (GAC)

Leopold® Backwash Water Trough

Leopold® backwash water troughs provide uniform removal of wash water during filter backwashing. They are molded of densely laminated fiberglass-reinforced plastic (FRP) for maintenance-free durability and long service life. Their resin-rich interior surface minimizes flow resistance. And they are designed and manufactured for rigidity and dimensional accuracy. Leopold® backwash water troughs are available in a wide selection of carrying capabilities to meet any filter design requirement.

Leopold® Trough-Guard® Media Baffle

Leopold® Trough-Guard® media baffles are a stainless steel assembly that is fastened onto both sides of washwater troughs to help ensure that no significant media loss occurs during sustained concurrent air/water backwash at recommended rates. The media baffles create a quiet, air-bubble-free zone where media settles out and returns to the filter bed. Applied in conjunction with the Leopold® FilterWorx® automatic filter control system, Trough-Guard® media baffles not only reduce media loss, but also provide optimum cleaning of the media.

Leopold® FilterWorx® Automatic Filter Control System

Leopold® filters include a complete filter control package to keep a constant watch on the essential parameters of the processes in the filter plant?both upstream and downstream. These automatic control systems continuously monitor filtrate quality to ensure that it meets regulatory requirements. They continuously monitor the condition of the filter media to ensure optimum filtration. And they automatically adjust flow rates to compensate for customer demand changes.

By continuously monitoring water quality and filter condition, Leopold® filter controls can automatically initiate and control the backwash sequence. This means the filter is cleaned when it needs to be cleaned, as frequently or infrequently as changing conditions require, and as long as necessary to clean the media. Filter run times and product quality are optimized at the lowest possible cost. And by keeping the filter media well-conditioned, the life of the filter can be lengthened.

By automatically sequencing backwash properly, Leopold® filter controls help avoid surges and potentially disastrous upsets which can damage a filter system and cost money.
