Clari-DAF™ System Dissolved Air Floatation (DAF)


The Leopold® Clari-DAF™ system is a particularly capable technology for removing low-density particles that cannot be removed by gravity sedimentation. It employs buoyancy flotation whereby tiny air bubbles are attached to the particle surfaces and float the solid particles to the surface of the water where they are removed as floating sludge.

A typical Leopold Clari-DAF system process train consists of chemical coagulation, flocculation, air injection, flotation, and sludge removal.

  • Chemical coagulants are introduced to improve flocculation efficiency.

  • The water is stirred to distribute the chemical coagulant among the solid particles and cause the particles to flocculate.

  • Air under pressure is dissolved into water according to Henry’s Law of Dissolution. Releasing the pressure back to STP (normal conditions or standard temperature and pressure) via a special device creates millions of “microbubbles” approximately 30 to 100 microns in diameter.

  • The microbubbles attach to the floc and float it to the surface where a sludge blanket is formed.

  • The sludge blanket is skimmed from the surface.
